Physically Active Preschoolers

It may seem that preschoolers, with all their energy, need no help staying physically active.  Actually, the opposite is true.  If preschoolers are guided through planned physical activity, studies have shown that they will be healthier and happier.

Preschoolers At Risk For Health Problems

According to www.healthykids.org, today’s preschoolers are at risk for a surprising group of health problems including obesity.  Television and computers have caused today’s preschoolers to remain far more sedentary than those of past generations.  While the incident levels of “outdoor” injuries and illnesses may decline, the rate of other problems may go up when children stay indoors in front of the television at all times.

Some studies indicate that children today are four times less active than those of earlier decades.  In addition to this relatively sedentary activity level, processed food, “fast food” and junk food are available to kids today in abundance.  Never before have children been able to consume so many calories with such ease and avoid physical activity at the same time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, childhood and adolescent obesity has reached epidemic proportions.  In 30 years, rates of obesity, defined as have a body mass index or BMI of more than 30, has doubled in children, going from seven percent to 17 percent, and quadrupled in adolescents from five percent to 21 percent.  More than one third of all children are overweight or obese.

Get Moving, Get Healthy

While diet is an important factor in keeping kids at a healthy weight, exercise must also be incorporated.  In fact, exercise may have an even bigger impact on overall health than diet, according to some sources.

However, getting kids moving is not just a matter of sending them outside to play.  In fact, many children lack coordination and skills that give them a fear of physical activity at a young age.  If you have ever been chosen last for a team or made fun of for being awkward, you can relate to what many kids experience when they are told to “get active” in some vague way.  In order to get moving and get healthy, we have to teach children to move effectively.
