Movin’ and Groovin’
We were born to move and yet we have stopped! Just a few generations ago, physical activity was an integral part of daily life and now, in the name of “progress,” physical INACTIVITY almost seems normal. This epidemic has recently come into focus within our culture and we need to continue to work on resolving the issue of poor health through lack of movement/exercise.
In less than two generations, physical activity has dropped by 32% in the U.S. Leisure time usually does not consist of exercise and vehicles, machines and technology now do our moving for us. We now exert just slightly more energy than if we slept all day. This inactivity has major health consequences. While smoking is responsible for 5 million deaths per year, 5.3 million deaths will be attributed to physical inactivity this year. These health issues also play a major role in the economy, health insurance and medical expenses.
These issues have a major impact on children as well. Today’s youth are the first generation expected to live to a younger age than their parents. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years! Inactive kids score up to 40% lower on achievement testes than their active friends. We see sports and physical activity as optional or extracurricular, rather than the powerful investments that they are!
Physical activity promotes good health and far more … It contributes to leadership, productivity and innovation. It lowers depression and crime, increases education and income levels, and builds confidence and self-worth/self-esteem. Technology and “progress” are good things, but they should not make us lose sight of the many benefits of effort, work ethic and physical activity. Comfort can be good as well, but we were made for more than just comfort, we were made for greatness!
It is crucial for us to instill healthy lifestyle habits in our youth right from the start. We can do this by introducing them to sports and having these sports be fun. As a culture, we must shift our mindset from viewing effort as bad, to thinking how action, effort and physical activity can be great investments towards our health and well-being.
